Tesla Powerwall 3 — What You're Getting

Powerwall 3 is Tesla's third-generation home battery with the inverter built in. 13.5 kWh usable capacity, up to 11.04 kW AC continuous output (subject to Tesla specifications and installation requirements), and an integrated solar inverter that takes up to 20 kW of PV — so for a lot of jobs it replaces both your battery and your solar inverter in one box.

If you've got an older string inverter on its last legs and you're adding a battery, Powerwall 3 is often the simplest, neatest solution. One unit, one app, one warranty contact.

Where Powerwall 3 isn't the right fit:

• Single-phase only. If your home is 3-phase (a lot of newer Gold Coast builds are), Powerwall 3 can charge from any phase but only discharges to one — you won't get clean whole-home backup across all three phases. Sigenergy is the better fit if you're 3-phase.
• Fixed at 13.5 kWh — can't be sized down for a smaller home or expanded later without buying a second unit
• Closed ecosystem — third-party energy management is limited

The Rebate Maths on Powerwall 3

Under the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program (current as of May 2026), the rebate is roughly $252 per usable kWh on the first 14 kWh. Powerwall 3 sits right under that line at 13.5 kWh — so you get the full top-tier rebate.

Process — Powerwall 3 from Quote to Switched-On

1. Send photos. Switchboard, existing inverter, proposed install location. Five-minute job.
2. Fixed-price quote. Battery, install, backup option, Energex paperwork — one price, rebate already deducted.
3. Order & schedule. Lead time is currently 2–4 weeks for stock.
4. Install day. Usually 1 day on site. Tidy work, drop sheets, no mess left behind.
5. Commission & walkthrough. Tesla app on your phone, walk-through of the modes (self-consumption, backup, time-based), all paperwork lodged.

Can Powerwall 3 work with my existing solar?

Yes. Powerwall 3 is AC-coupled to existing solar — it sits alongside your current inverter. If your existing inverter is old or undersized, we can talk about replacing it with the Powerwall 3's built-in inverter (DC-coupled) for better efficiency.

My home is 3-phase. Is Powerwall 3 OK?

Can I add a second Powerwall later?

Yes — Powerwall 3 supports daisy-chaining additional "Expansion" units (no inverter, just battery) for 13.5 kWh more each. Note: the federal rebate is one-per-property, so the second unit doesn't attract another rebate.

How long does Powerwall 3 last in a blackout?

Depends what you're powering. Essential circuits only (fridge, lights, a few power points)? Easily 24+ hours. Whole-home with aircon running? Could be 6–10 hours. If your solar's still working in daytime, the battery recharges and runs indefinitely.

Do I need to join a VPP?

No. Powerwall 3 is VPP-capable, which satisfies the rebate eligibility. Whether you ever join one is up to you — there are some decent VPP deals in QLD but you're never forced.

Where does it get installed?

Wall-mounted, suitable for indoor or outdoor installation when installed in accordance with Tesla requirements. Typical spots are the garage wall or external wall near the switchboard. Final location is confirmed during quoting based on clearances, exposure, switchboard/inverter layout and manufacturer requirements.
