The QLD 2027 Deadline — Plain English

From 1 January 2027, every QLD home must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in:

• Every bedroom
• Hallways connecting bedrooms to other parts of the house
• If no hallway connection: any part of the house between bedrooms and exits
• On each storey (even those without bedrooms)

"Interconnected" means when one alarm goes off, they all go off. This used to apply only when a home was sold or leased. From 1 Jan 2027 it applies to all homes regardless.

What an Upgrade Usually Involves

A lot of the Upper Coomera homes we attend were built with hardwired alarms in hallways only. Under the 2027 rules that means adding alarms — one per bedroom, plus storey-level coverage — all interconnected with the existing ones.

Typical alarm counts by home layout:

• 3-bed single-storey — typically needs 4–5 alarms (3 bedrooms + hallway + living area)
• 4-bed single-storey — 5–6 alarms
• 4-bed double-storey — 6–7 alarms (alarms upstairs + downstairs storey coverage)
• 5-bed double-storey with media room — 7–9 alarms

Hardwired vs Wireless Interconnect

You have two compliant options:

• Hardwired interconnected — alarms wired together. Best when ceiling access is good. Requires running cable through ceiling cavity.
• Wireless interconnected (RF) — alarms talk to each other wirelessly via RF mesh. Best when ceiling access is poor (concrete slabs upstairs, vaulted ceilings, etc.) and faster to install.

Both options are 100% legally compliant under the QLD rules. Wireless is usually faster, hardwired is usually a touch cheaper per alarm. We'll recommend what fits your home.
